Updated legislation to deal with praedial larceny will soon go into effect in Barbados.
The Protection of Agricultural Products Act was passed in the House of Assembly and the Senate in September last year and is expected to be proclaimed in February.
Under the new legislation, any person found guilty of an offence under the Act is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $100 000, imprisonment for five years, or both.
Further, any person in possession of commercial quantities of agricultural products and fails to produce to a police officer, within 24 hours of the request, a delivery note or proof of ownership, on summary conviction, can be charged up to $100 000, imprisonment for five years, or both.
