Pandemic’s green shoots

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a renewed interest in gardening, says president of the Barbados Horticultural Society (BHS) Susanne Ryan-Graham, and she is calling on younger people whose interest has grown to join their organisation.

The group’s last flower and garden show and fundraising event was held in January 2020, and the resident was keen to get this year’s show off the ground. However, the group’s four affiliates pulled out at the last minute, threatening to derail this year’s offering.

“The sale of plants went up and the interest in plants and natural foods, because persons had time on their hands to plant and prepare naturally fruits and food during the lockdowns. Planning for our show usually takes six months, but we got it done,” Ryan-Graham said proudly.

The president was speaking yesterday, the final day of this year’s Plant Extravaganza at the BHS headquarters in Balls, Christ Church. (RA)
