There were no downed trees or power lines following the passage of race horse Hurricane, which devastated the Garrison Savannah around 7:20 p.m. last night to capture the 83rd running of the Grade 1 Barbados Derby.
Masterly handled by stable jockey Antonio Bishop, the Gay Smith-owned and Edward Walcott-trained three-year-old colt Hurricane gave a herculean performance once more to win by two and a quarter lengths.
Groomed by Arnold Morris, Hurricane hovered dangerously in third place behind the speedy Afternoon Delight and Get Crackin in the 2 000 metres event which carried a purse of $113 000.
The favourite never looked in trouble and when Hurricane finally made land fall in 2:11.1 minutes he simply left his opponents piled up like debris.
Winning this third and final Jewel gives Hurricane the Barbados Triple Crown thus elevating himself to a list of esteemed horses. (LY)
