An infusion of new foreign and domestic investment into horse racing, especially into a new track and better quality horses.

That is what Canadian-based, legendary Barbados champion jockey Patrick Husbands is convinced his birthplace urgently needs to accelerate the growth of the sport, propelling it to new and brighter heights in the years ahead.

Failure to act, he warned, would keep the sport of kings, queens, and wealthy people at the level of a “hobby” instead of a successful sporting endeavour that attracts more visitors and energises public support.

“Horse racing in Barbados is losing the old heads and for the young people, who are coming into the (sport) today, going forward is pretty slim,” Husbands told Weekend Sport during a conversation from his home in Brampton, Ontario, where he is a highly successful champion in the saddle, who is about to be inducted into Canada’s prestigious horse racing Hall of Fame in August at Woodbine in Toronto.
