Bajans bag more medals

Barbados enjoyed a fruitful final day at the 35th CARIFTA Aquatics Championships yesterday.

The young Bajan swimmers snagged a further 11 medals up to press time to boost their overall tally to 40 ahead of the meet’s conclusion at the Aquatic Centre last night.

Their medal tally so far was an improvement on the 26 they won at the 2019 edition as well as the 30 they achieved in 2018.

Heidi Stoute started off Barbados’ success when she landed a stunning victory in the 11-12 Girls’ 400 metres freestyle. She broke the 12-year-old CARIFTA record of 4:41.80 minutes set by Tyla Martin with an impressive time of 4:36.93 minutes.

She finished over 20 seconds faster than Martinique’s Sayane Guivissa who took silver in 4:58.88 minutes.

Barbadian Ayobami Leon-Barker collected her first individual medal when she claimed the bronze in 4.59.26 minutes. (NM)
