The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) proudly commends West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews for being designated Wisden’s Leading T20 Cricketer in the World for 2023.
Matthews copped the award for an outstanding eight (8) consecutive T20I Player of the Match awards as well as 1,551 T20 runs (international and domestic) and 57 wickets.
One of her standout performances came against Australia, where she blazed a match-winning 132 runs off just 64 balls, leading her team to chase down a target of 213 – the highest successful run chase in women’s T20 Internationals.
Matthews’ leadership extended beyond the international stage. She captained the victorious Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) team and was part of the winning squad in India’s Women’s Premier League (WPL).
This recognition marks a significant milestone, as Hayley Matthews becomes the first female cricketer to ever receive the Wisden’s Leading T20 Cricketer in the World award.
WIPA President and CEO, Wavell Hinds, praised Matthews’ achievements, stating, “Hayley Matthews had an extraordinary 2023 as an athlete, and this recognition is well-deserved.
