Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary became the first winner of the new Ryan Brathwaite Zone as they topped both standings on day seven of the 2023 Chefette Frosteez National Primary Schools Athletic Championships at the Usain Bolt Complex.
A total of 210 points was enough to see Wilkie beat Blackman and Gollop (194) to the girls’ division. St Catherine’s Primary completed the podium in third with 157 points.
The Pine Plantation Road school finished proceedings with 264.50 points in the boys’ divisions, 51.5 clear of their nearest challengers Blackman and Gollop, who ended with 213. A DaCosta Edwards Primary finished in third with 152 points.
Indicative of Wilkie’s success was the joint Victor Ludorum award to two of their students Dalani Burke and Jaedan Hinds-Grazette who both earned 30 points.
Hinds-Grazette finished with the fastest time in the Under-11 boys’ 100 metre dash, coming home at 14.89 seconds. His nearest challenger was Jazari Graham from Saint Mark’s Primary, who finished in 16 seconds. He also won his 200 and 400 metre dashes.
Eleven-year-old Burke was particularly impressive in his 400 metre dash, completing it in 1 minute and 7:83 seconds. Trailing behind was his schoolmate Ameer Morris with 1:12:39 seconds. He also won the Under-13 boys’ 100 and 200 metre dashes with times of 13.87 and 28.67 seconds, respectively.
The Victrix Ludorum crown went to Aria Clarke of Blackman and Gollop who was perfect in the Under-9 sprints. She clocked 13.05 seconds in the 80m, 16.71 in the 100m and 25.62 in the 200m.
Jamarko Douglas of Ellerton Primary won the Under-7 boys’ division trophy, thanks to his efforts in the 50m (9.66) and tennis ball throw (20.53m). Cameron Weekes (Blackman and Gollop) left his mark with a leap of 1.28 metres in the Under-7 boys’ standing broad jump.
Ariah Sobers of Lawrence T Gay Memorial led the Under-7 girls’ division with 18 points. She was first in the 50m (10.49) and second in the tennis ball throw (12.54m). Abigail Richards (Blackman and Gollop) jumped 1.15 metres for victory in the Under-7 girls’ standing broad jump while Zane Arthur-Federick (Wilkie Cumberbatch) threw the tennis ball the farthest (13.09m).
The action continues today at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex when the Freida Nicholls Zone gets underway.
