Weston erosion woes for fisherfolk

West Coast fishermen are crying out that yet another beach development project is causing damage to the coast.

In Weston, St James, fishermen told the Daily Nation their beach had drastically changed since beach improvement work started near Queen’s Fort in Porters.

However, director of the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU), Dr Leo Brewster, said the changes to the beach were not related to the work but were instead due to a severe swell season.

On Saturday, fisherman Othneal Wilson said beach erosion there had reached never before seen levels and it was being replicated at other beaches along the coast.

“In all my years I have never seen beach erosion like this here. Since that project at St Helena, the Queens Fort beach rehabilitation, all the sand here start to move, soon we may not have any beach here at all,” he said. (CA)
