A mother is questioning why it is taking so long to receive child maintenance payments.
The woman, who asked not to be identified, said her daughter’s father had deposited money at the St Matthias Magistrates’ Court office in Christ Church since the first week of April, but she has yet to get a call to collect the funds.
“This money is money that was in arrears from the time my daughter was a year old. The money went up in the thousands of dollars. A lawyer was dealing with it, but I was working in the [hospitality sector] and I couldn’t afford the lawyer anymore. She came through legal aid, but then she said they done away with that and I couldn’t afford she no more,” she said.
She said the father had not made payments for about ten years but sometimes he would make a big payment, and then nothing for two or three months.
The upset woman said she had called the office on numerous occasions to find out when the payment would be ready, and was told payments were completed the second week in the month. (CA)
