It will be a challenging task for the senior men’s national football team to compete at the highest level in their upcoming 2022/23 Concacaf Nations League group games without regular competition on the island.
That is the view of football coach and administrator Renaldo “Peewee” Gilkes as the Tridents prepare for four group games in the span of ten days to kick off their Nations League campaign in June.
With venues still to be determined, the Bajans will oppose Antigua and Barbuda on June 2 followed by an away fixture to Cuba three days later.
Guadeloupe will be the Tridents’ next opponents on June 9 and the return fixture between the two sides is slated for June 12.
Head coach Russell Latapy’s men have just over a month to prepare for the crucial fixtures, but the continued absence of local competition is a tremendous hindrance to the team’s chances of preparing for and playing well in the tournament. (NM)
