Tourism shortfall

Barbados’ tourism sector is facing a potential shortage of labour, a matter which chief executive officer of the Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association (BHTA), Rudy Grant, says is forcing action to stave off any impact on the industry’s ability to meet labour demands.

The BHTA head yesterday confirmed that some members of the organisation, which represents operators in all sections of the tourism industry, had indicated they were experiencing challenges with labour.

Though he noted it was “not a large percentage”, he said it was “high enough” to sound warning bells of a potential problem.

“I think there are a number of things that have changed in the tourism landscape with COVID. There would have been a period of time when there was very little activity taking place in tourism.
