Tough day for Bajan surfers

Barbados’ surf stars had a tough time in the Soup Bowl waters yesterday as the Diamonds International Barbados Surf Pro Qualifying Series 3 000 held its second day of competition at the Bathsheba Beach on St Joseph’s east coast.

Caleb Rapson and Che Allan were the only local male surfers to advance from their Round of 64 heats in tough, two-to-three foot conditions during the World Surf League’s North American QS.

There was a massive upset in the third-to-last heat as top-rated surfer Joshua Burke was eliminated in third place with his total of 9.06.

American Braden Jones took the heat and advanced to the round of 32 with his total of 10.04. Fifteen-year-old American Kai Kushner was second with 9.94.

Rapson continued his good form in the water and scored 9.7 to advance from the first heat of the Round of 64. He also scored 9.13 to advance second from his Round of 96 heat.  (NM)
