Government Summer Camps have had an overwhelming response after a two-year hiatus, with some camp counsellors expecting the numbers to increase by the end of the week.
Yesterday, was the first day of the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Community Empowerment’s annual summer camp, which kicked off at 43 venues across the island, with three specialised programmes to be held. The camps, which will run until August 26, are for children aged four through 15 years old.
At the Bush Hall Community Centre, Bush Hall, St Michael, camp director Sharon Sargeant of the Cultural Summer Programme said yesterday she had to turn away some of the campers as there were so many.
“The plan is to really get the young people together, get them into the cultural arts so they know the history of the island. We want to keep the children safe, share our history with them and help them to be creative in their own way,” she said, adding that she had a complement of four camp counsellors.
Sargeant said some campers had pre-registered online while others turned up yesterday with registration forms, and so could she not give a definitive number of campers just yet. (RA)
