State wants 15 years for gunman

Gunman Astu Jones, who trained his illegal weapon on lawmen and got shot in the stomach in return, has promised to put his past behind him as he looks to become “a better version of myself”.

However, the state’s Counsel Kevin Forde feels Jones should get a 15-year sentence as respect for lawmen must be inculcated in Barbadians.

Jones, 24, of Ealing Grove, Christ Church, was back in the No. 4 Supreme Court after he had pleaded guilty last December to having a .38-calibre revolver; having three rounds of .38-calibre ammunition; using the firearm to resist or prevent his arrest and assaulting lawmen Bradley Cutting and Andre Miller, all on July 11, 2020.

He returns to court today when the time he has spent on remand at Dodds Prison will be read into evidence. (HLE)
