Squatters relocating to Rock Hall, St Philip, still have to purchase the land, says St Philip South MP India Weir.
Last Saturday, after checking in on the households of fire victims in the area, Weir said misconceptions about the relocation were being circulated and he wanted to set the record straight.
“This entire area, the Government has already committed to providing assistance to the residents over here to have them relocated because many of them . . . may not have the financial wherewithal to move the houses. But as you can see, the structures are pretty good structures and Government has committed to providing land at a reasonable price.
“They still have to purchase the land, contrary to the message that is out there that everything is being given for free. That is not the case and where there are cases of abject poverty in moving the houses, then some assistance would be given just like we do normally when we have cases in which the Welfare Department intervenes, as was the case with Hurricane Elsa.
“So the notion that Government is building new houses and moving these people for free, I think is a complete misunderstanding on the part of some people and then on the other hand mischievousness on the part of others,” he said. (SB)
