Spruce-up for Barrow’s headstone

On the eve of Errol Barrow Day, soldiers from the Barbados Defence Force were engaged in ensuring the National Hero’s headstone reflected the occasion.

When a NATION NEWS team visited the Barbados Military Cemetery at Gravesend, Needham’s Point, St Michael, yesterday a group of 21 soldiers – 13 members of the Barbados Coast Guard led by Chief Petty Officer Omar Holligan, six members of the Barbados Defence Force grounds staff and two members of the Barbados Regiment – were busy cleaning the two-acre burial ground.

Garrison secretary of the Military Cemetery Association, Warrant Officer Class II (WOII) Winfield Boyce, said it was all part of regular maintenance of the cemetery, but there was an added reverence in light of the holiday today.

“I think it is fitting to do it now because tomorrow [today] the cemetery is going to be nice and fresh, and I believe there are persons who would probably take the opportunity to visit the cemetery tomorrow [today], and view the memorial of the late Errol Walton Barrow,” he said.

Boyce thanked the members of the Barbados Defence Force for the upkeep of the Military Cemetery. (RA)
