Springer Memorial had tongues wagging yesterday at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex when they registered the largest margin of victory in a Dasani-Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools Athletic Championships zone (BSSAC) to leave many wondering if they would be champions again come next Friday’s finals.
Competing in the newly created Starcom Network Shane Brathwaite zone, Springer ended the day with 613.5 points to finish 225 above Harrison College, whose valiant effort got them 388.5 points. In third was The Lodge School with 330.5 points.
The boys’ division was a lot closer as Lodge chipped away at Harrison College’s overnight lead of 106 points throughout the day. However, the Crumpton Street boys (521 points) held on to win the division. Falling 54 points short was Lodge School on 467, and rounding off the podium was St Leonard’s Boys’, who registered 324.

The Girls’ Under-20 division belonged to Springer as they won every race in that category. Most convincing of those was the 4×100 metres relay win which clocked in at 47.95 seconds, with The Lodge School only managing 50.45.
A time of 2 minutes 32.84 seconds ensured Ranesha Stewart was first in the Under-20 girls’ 800 metres. Richann Herbert, also of Springer, succeeded in the 400 metres hurdles with a time of 1:17.26 minutes and Tuwana McClean (25.23 seconds) won the 200 metres.
Laila McIntyre of Harrison College was best in the junior girls’ 1500 metres (5:24.82). Leanna Greene showed out for Springer in the Under-15 girls’ 400m in a time of 1:01.22 minutes while Springer’s Kimara Blackett (12.82 seconds) was the only athlete in the zone to dip under 13 seconds in the Under-15 girls’ 100m dash.
Fynn Armstrong reminded spectators of his CARIFTA pedigree when he won yesterday’s 800m event. He was challenged throughout by Lodge’s Kamili Brathwaite, but the Harrison College student lengthened his stride to leave Brathwaite trailing in his wake. His sprint finish saw him cross in a time of 2:05:52.
Joshua Dottin (55.83 seconds) of Lodge took an easy victory in the Under-20 boys’ 400m hurdles, while Amani Mascoll-Beckles (21.71) was comfortable in his Under-20 boys’ 200m victory.
Double winner Ke’iron Haynes of Lodge proved too strong for his opponents in the Under-17 boys’ 800 metres (2:07.42) and 200m (22.61). HC’s Ephraim Gill was top of the class in the Under-17 boys 400m hurdles (1:02.81).
