Sir Charles’ statue 3-year project

The creation of the statue for cricketing knight Sir Charles Griffith has been a successful three-year process.

Marketing and communications manager of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA), Steven Leslie, told Saturday Sport that the statue was completed last month and everything was on stream for the unveiling at Kensington Oval on March 25.

Sculptor Jason Hope is embarking on his third major statue, following those of Sir Frank Walcott and Sir Wes Hall.

Hope, 46, a product of Turners Hall, St Andrew, acknowledged that late trade union head honcho Sir Frank as a National Hero, would have been his biggest project but was delighted to get the chance to build a statue of Sir Charles, a former Test fast bowler and an integral part of the West Indies team in the 1960s.
