Second win on the trot for Windies Under-19s

West Indies U19 Women raced to a comprehensive 77-run victory over Indonesia U19 Women in Group C of the inaugural ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup at the Senwes Sporte Park in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

Led by another player of the match performance from Zaida James, who scored her second half century, West Indies posted 176-3 in their 20 overs. Indonesia could only manage 99-9 from the allotted overs.

West Indies have qualified from their group for the next round, with a game to spare.

Windies captain Ashmini Munisar won the toss, and once again, openers Zaida James and Shunelle Sawh got their side off to a good start, putting on 95 runs for the first wicket.

Left hander James picked up where she left off against Ireland. Her score of 55 included eight fours and two sixes, one of which was a massive slog sweep over cow corner and into the tents. There were contributions throughout the innings, most notably Barbadian Tristan Holder’s 35 as Indonesia struggled to halt scoring or take wickets.

In reply, Indonesia never managed to put the pressure back onto West Indies, ending the powerplay with 27 runs and the loss of opener Gusti Ulansari. The accurate spin bowling of Shalini Samaroo, Munisar and James prevented Indonesia from getting close to the initial required run rate of 8.85 an over, which then rose to 13.40 by the halfway stage.

Medium fast bowler Djenaba Joseph reaped the rewards, taking 3-14 to seal the win.

On Thursday, West Indies will play New Zealand to decide who will take top spot in Group C. Indonesia will face Ireland later that day to see who will get their first points of the competition.
