Sand volleyball is set to take off big time in Barbados with the National Sports Council (NSC) constructing three courts opposite the Wildey Gymnasium.
Work began in earnest with the first court and the terrace area which is to provide seating for spectators. While top officials from the NSC would not disclose the cost of the project and the estimated length of time the work would take, citing that an official statement will be made, Nation Sport was informed that the courts will be built similar to a set-up in Tobago.
The NSC has also hinted that sand volleyball will be a new discipline offered to the schools shortly and interviews have already been conducted to hire a new volleyball coach to replace former national captain Erskine Welch, who retired last year.
Another former Barbados captain, John Stuart, along with Andrew Culpepper are the volleyball coaches presently employed at the NSC. (KB)
