People selling canes and other agricultural products by the roadside may soon have to produce a receipt to allow authorities to trace where they came from.
Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir says this is among some of the measures Government will be putting into the new praedial larceny legislation which will soon be coming back to Parliament.
He gave the update when he called into Starcom Network’s radio call-in programme Down To Brass Tacks yesterday.
Making specific reference to the NATION’s report two weeks ago about cane farmer Patrick Bethell who caught two thieves stealing canes from his farm and the wide public discussion that followed, the minister said: “In terms of Bethell and the sugar cane and the discussion about fellas standing around the roundabout selling sugar cane, when we are finished with the legislation, those guys would literally have to produce a receipt showing the source of the sugar cane or the farm which they grew it. That is what traceability is going to do.”
