Residents unhappy with bridge closing

St Andrew residents are upset that another bridge in the parish has been closed suddenly.

However, Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Works, Maintenance and Water Resources Dr Romel Springer said the closure of the Bawdens bridge was unavoidable and had to be done to protect residents and motorists.

“The state of the bridge was brought to our attention on Wednesday and on Thursday senior officials from the Ministry visited decided to close it. It could not be avoided at the time because when they saw the extent of the degradation of the bridge, the immediate decision to save lives had to be made.

“Yes, it’s an inconvenience and it will have an impact on people’s gas money and the time it will take them to get to and from work and back, but that bridge being closed is necessary to ensure we don’t have a catastrophe or a disaster in St Andrew,” Springer said.

The cracks underneath the structure and the heavy duty vehicles and public transport buses using it was factored into the decision to close the bridge.
