Residents ready to protest against Cement Plant

Problems are once more brewing at Arawak Cement Plant as there is a protest planned against what was said to be the company’s bad environmental health practices.

Melony James told the Daily Nation yesterday she was very passionate about health and safety.

A former employee of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation, she now lives in the British Virgin Islands but returned home on vacation this month, staying with her parents in Sutherland Road, St Lucy, a short distance from the cement manufacturer.

Residents have had issues with the plant for years, citing dust, emissions, noise and more.

Upon her return and armed with research into similar plants within the region, James said she was prepared to take the fight to Arawak. She has posted a social media video asking for support in her fight, adding there was even a plan to block the road leading to the plant. (CA)
