‘Reckless’ driver fined $15 000

A motorist whose “reckless” manoeuvre killed his two passengers, one of whom was his friend, was fined a total of $15 000 for causing their deaths by dangerous driving, when he appeared in the No. 5 Supreme Court yesterday.

Shanty O’Brien Bowen, 44, of Airlie Tenantry, Cave Hill, St Michael, and Bournes Village, St George, had pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of 37-year-old Candace Cindy Clarke and 49-year-old Michelle Gibson, on August 31, 2015, by driving his vehicle MY 819 on Congo Road, St Philip, in a manner and a speed dangerous to the public.

Gibson, a former long-time resident of Black Rock, St Michael, where she operated a popular hair salon, was the front seat passenger and died on the spot.

Clarke had to be freed from the vehicle by fire officers using the Jaws of Life. She later succumbed to her injuries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. (HLE)
