Project ending March 31

The National Cleanup Programme, which was put in place after the eruption of La Soufriere Volcano to clean and beautify Barbados, will come to an end on March 31.

More than 3 000 workers who were hired under that programme and others administered by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) for the past two years, were given the news on Thursday evening during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw and other Government officials at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Some left in anger after the announcement, but those who remained were informed that the NHC would retain about 500 for its housing projects and tree trimming, Government was also offering training and the private sector was asked to absorb some.

The programme cost the Government $54 million and at times led to workers complaining about delays in payments. (Nation News)
