Opposition leader warns Government of Barbados to leave education alone

Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne has warned the Government of Barbados to keep its hands off education.

He said they should not go ahead with the proposed changes “unless those reforms in education are progressive”.

The political leader was delivering the first Budget Reply in the House of Assembly since the 2022 General Elections in Barbados.

Thorne said there was a large segment of the population which understood what education had done for this country.

He said he could not understand why the Government of Barbados would want to push ahead with reforms when there were examples of them having been implemented elsewhere and failed.

“You speak to me about your purpose, I enquire about your motive,” Thorne said, adding he suspected the motive was complete dominance over the lives of the poor, but they must be elevated.

The Opposition Leader also noted the education reforms had been delayed until 2026. (SAT)
