Numbers dwindle after strong start in Christ Church East Central

Barbadians took to the streets this morning to pick their next representative in the House of Assembly.

In the Christ Church East Central constituency, incumbent Ryan Straughn was facing a challenge from three other candidates. Straughn would have beaten the Democratic Labour Party’s Ronald Jones in the 2018 election.

He was up against Rasheed Belgrave of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Shawn Tudor of the Alliance Party for Progress (APP) and Bajan Free Party’s Jannette Ifill.

There were about 50 people waiting in the line to place their ‘X’ when the Nation team arrived, but the numbers petered out later in the morning.

COVID-19 protocols were in place, with temperature checks and hand sanitising upon entrance.

Later in the evening, chairman of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Leslie Haynes QC, said there was an indication of low voter turnout. (AC)
