Organisers are expecting a high level of competition when the National Primary School Athletics Championship (NAPSAC) makes a welcomed return with a slightly new look over the next four days.
A new initiative, the Chefette Frosteez Distance Relay Championships, will commence today at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex with two zones competing every day until Friday.
Organisers are expecting about 20 to 25 athletes from each of the island’s primary schools across the next four days of competition.
Meet director Julian Pierre said the athletes were eager to get into competition after being sidelined for the past two years because of health and safety restrictions related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the excitement was building.
“The children have been wanting it, especially the athletes,” he said. “They have been missing the competition and being in that atmosphere with the excitement, nerves, and mixtures of emotions. The consensus is they are really excited to come and compete in their zones.”
Athletes in the Under-9 division will be competing as a mixed group in their 4 x 400 metres relays.
In the Under-11 division, both the girls and boys will take part in separate 4 x 600 relays, while the athletes in the Under-13 division will compete in 4 x 800 relays. (NM)
