After a viral video of motorists using the junction at Fairchild Street, which has sparked public debate, the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) is clarifying the correct way to use the traffic signals there.
Road users are reminded that the road markings at this junction indicate which lanes to use and the directions for where motorists may go; while the traffic signal dictates who has the priority to move at a specific time.
When approaching the Fairchild Street signalised junction from Bay Street/Cavans Lane, the road eventually divides into three lanes. The left lane is for traffic turning left only onto Bridge Street/Charles Duncan O’Neal Bridge. The centre lane is a shared-use lane for traffic proceeding straight onto Upper Fairchild Street and turning left onto the bridge. The right lane is for motorists who want to turn right onto Probyn Street.
The traffic signals indicate who has priority to move at a specific time. When the left arrow is green on the traffic signal, motorists in the left lane can turn left. Motorists at the head of the centre lane who want to turn left can also do so when the left arrow is green on the traffic signal. However, motorists in the centre lane who wish to proceed straight are required to wait until the straight arrow turns green on the traffic signal. When the right arrow on the traffic signal turns green, motorists in the right lane can proceed onto Probyn Street.
Motorists are reminded that this only applies to traffic approaching the Fairchild Street traffic signals from Bay Street/Cavans Lane. (PR/MTW)
