Mottley repeats call for reparations

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has again made a case for reparations to be paid to countries which suffered the oppression of slavery.

In her appearance on stage at the Time 100 Summit 2022 in New York yesterday, she said it was time for European enslaving nations to compensate enslaved countries which were also now battling the effects of climate change as a result of actions of those same countries.

The subject of reparations was raised in the question-and-answer session by Time CEO and editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal, who noted that Barbados was appointed to chair the CARICOM Prime Ministerial sub committee on reparations and quizzed Mottley on her recent statement that she would be writing to European countries on the unresolved issue of reparations.

The Prime Minister responded that while it was a matter that had been temporarily put on hold because of the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, it would not be swept under the table.

She indicated she would be relentless on that subject, as well as on issues of global financing and the impact of climate change on vulnerable, small states. (GC)
