Milestone sugar agreement signed

The Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC) and the Sugar Industries Staff Association (SISA) have signed what was described as a milestone Collective Bargaining Agreement in an effort to keep up to date with modern legislation and iron out contentious issues.

The two entities have a history of clashes as in 2019 they were at loggerheads concerning the retrenchment of several BAMC workers, including former president of SISA, Edwin O’Neal, who is currently the president of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations. The matter went to the Employment Rights Tribunal, which awarded the workers compensation in 2021.

Closer to the present, current SISA president Dwight Miller had threatened to take strike action in February over the absence of pay negotiations.

However, there were no traces of this seeming bad blood at Portvale Factory yesterday when the two sides willingly signed off on something they said would help keep relations between them smooth. (CA)
