Although it is rare, men can also get breast cancer and the Barbados Cancer Society now has the equipment to test for it.
Medical coordinator of the society’s breast screening programme, Dr Shirley Jhagroo, is asking men to come forward and undergo the necessary checks. She also urged women to encourage men to get screened for cancers of the breast, prostate and colon.
“Men can come and get biopsies. Men can get breast cancer, but unfortunately many are diagnosed late because they may see something and don’t do anything about it. That’s why we brought in a special attachment for male breasts,” said Jhagroo.
She was speaking yesterday after the CIBC FirstCaribbean’s Walk For The Cure donation ceremony at Hilton Barbados, Needham’s Point, St Michael. The event raised $200 000 for the screening programme and US$350 000 across the region. (Nation News)
