Magistrate: Parents should be charged too

Parents have been accused of failing in their responsibility to their children and causing them to be burdens on the police and court system.

The stinging rebuke has come from Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes, who said if he had his way, parents would be charged and made to face the law courts when their minor children commit crime.

“Wunna parents not doing wunna job but every time wunna children get in the system is we who suppose to be sacrificing and doing the hard work. Wunna ain’t doing nothing.

“I know what I would like. I would like to charge all wunna parents. That is what I would like, but he’s 18, so we can’t charge you because he is an adult,” Chief Magistrate Weekes told the stepfather of a teenager who was before him.

“But some of the ones that are younger I would like to charge the parents ’cause wunna ain’t doing wunna work. Wunna unleashing these people without any value system on us,” he said. (HLE)
