Lecturer: Let’s see how Cabinet performs

Political scientist Dr Kristina Hinds says the new Cabinet is still large, but she is willing to see how it performs before passing judgement.

On Monday Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced the new Cabinet following the January 19 General Election in which the Barbados Labour Party won all 30 seats. There are 20 ministers compared with 24 just before the election and 26 when the party first came to office in May 2018.

“This is 20 but the composition is different . . . . My major concern in all of this is cost but if the benefits outweigh the cost, then perhaps it is a wise decision. . . . but we need change,” Hinds said.

“There is a lot of work to be done but there is always a lot of work to be done in Barbados, so this is nothing unusual. The Government has the opportunity because it has all 30 seats and 12 senators to have a lot of options, so clearly the Prime Minister is using many of these, which is fine.
