‘Leave out sexual orientation’

A suggestion is being made to leave “sexual orientation” out of the new Barbados Constitution, but it can be addressed with via legislation in Parliament.

Attorney Corey Beckles made the argument on Sunday as one of the panellists on Starcom Network’s VOB 92.9 FM discussion entitled Watch Out My Children: Constitutional Reform And The Inclusion Of Sexual Orientation In The Supreme Law Of The Land.

“If the Government so desires to give sexual orientation a place within the law in Barbados, then legislation passed by Parliament is the better place for it to go after much debate, as was done in the recently passed Employment Rights (Prevention of Discrimination) Act.”

He argued that it should not be added to the Constitution to appease a single group and since sexual orientation “suffers from serious flaws” any legislation about the term should be done carefully. (Nation News)
