iWeb wins fourth calypso crown

iWeb (Ian Webster) is the 2023 calypso monarch of Barbados.

With 128 value points for his performance of Brain, iWeb was crowned early Saturday morning as the winner of the Courtesy Garage Pic O De Crop Competition, held for the first time at the National Botanical Gardens.

For the various calypso pundits, it was a straight fight with AC (Adrian Clarke’s) Anansi and the Big Bad Ram, but it was not as close as expected, the pair divided by 19 value points.

Both hail from Digicel First Citizens De Big Show.

House of Soca claimed the next two places.

Defending champion Quon was third with 79 value points, performing his new song Sing Quon Sing. Tentmate Billboard was fourth, six value points behind, with Foolish.

Only the top four places were announced.

iWeb, who won his fourth calypso crown, has until Wednesday to choose either a brand new Nissan vehicle or $100 000 in cash. AC walked away with $40 000, Quon $20 000 and $15 000 for Billboard.

A late start due to technical difficulties meant the presentation party and calypsonians were assembled just before 2:30 a.m. for the announcement. Many had already left the venue, while thousands were assembling in The City for the Berger Colour Shop & Kooyman Foreday Mornin’ Jam. (SAT)
