Hurricane set to strike

It’s a different race at the same place but Hurricane is expected to strike again.

Tonight at the Garrison Savannah around 7 o’clock under floodlights, the Gay Smith-owned colt and heavy favourite should take the 83rd running of the Grade 1 Barbados Derby.

Victory in the 2 000-metre event for West Indian-bred three-year-olds would complete a Triple Crown success for Hurricane, who captured the first and second jewels. He will be ridden by the ever improving Antonio Bishop, who is after a fourth Derby triumph.

Undoubtedly, the Edward Walcott Jr-trained Hurricane is the best three-year-old in the country. He has a near-perfect record, winning four of his five starts.

He moved like an express train when capturing the Barbados Guineas 1 570 metres in May and the Midsummer Creole Classic 1 800 metres in August, both Grade 1 events. He looked unstoppable then and very little has changed that suggests anything different. (LY)
