The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season is one month away, but without any warning the first storm blew across the Garrison Savannah yesterday.
Second-favourite Hurricane stormed to an impressive win in the first jewel in the Barbados triple crown, the BB $36 000 Guineas for West Indian-bred three-year-olds.
The 4-1 chance, ridden by Anderson Bishop, prevailed over Springhead Stables companions, 12-1 bet Jaguar, under Anderson Trotman, and 17-1 chance Pussykat, ridden by Dario Dalrymple, in the 72nd running of the feature race on the seventh race day for the year of the Barbados Turf Club (BTC).
Bishop brought back Hurricane from the 1 570-metre trip around the historic racetrack in driving rain in one minute, 41 seconds flat to win 1 1/2 lengths clear to lead the clean sweep of top three places for owner Gay Smith and trainer Edward Walcott.
Smith and Walcott also saddled 9-1 choice Bobkat, under Rachaad Knights, that finished sixth in the race. (LY)
