Humphrey wants more done for the disabled

Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey says more must be done to ensure people living with disabilities are fully included in the society.

He was speaking during a donation of $3 000 to the Barbados Down Syndrome Association yesterday at the Warrens Office Towers, as part of activities to mark World Down’s Syndrome Day under the theme Inclusion.

“We keep speaking about a fully accessible Barbados, and I think that must mean something real and bigger than just wheelchairs for people to live a life in dignity and to have their rights respected. It is my sure and certain conclusion that the barriers that are preventing people with disabilities from functioning effectively in society really is not theirs, it is ours,” he said.

He added his ministry had been discussing over the last few weeks how it could elevate those with disabilities and be of greater assistance. (RA)
