Hatching hitch, but no shortage

Although the supply of hatching eggs to Barbados has reduced significantly over the past weeks, poultry producers are assuring there is no shortage of chicken.

President of the Barbados Egg and Poultry Producers Association Stephen Layne told the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday though it was impacting local production, it had not reached a critical stage.

“The country is viewing importation of hatching eggs from other sources but that is a process that the Ministry of Agriculture, through the Veterinary Department, will have to check out because we can’t import eggs willy-nilly because you may import diseases, so there has to be some work before you start that,” said Layne.

“We are still above water but we have to work on the amount of eggs we can get for hatching so we can get back to the numbers we were at. But we are not at a critical stage. The industry is not in jeopardy. We just want to be able to increase production.” (SB)
