Govt backing freedom struggle

Government says it is answering the call to embrace Emancipation Day in greater measure.

For several years, during the Emancipation Day celebrations held at the JTC Ramsay Roundabout, home of the Emancipation (Bussa) Statue, various groups under the Pan-African Coalition of Organisations have appealed to the relevant authorities to recognise the struggle of freedom fighters on a larger scale and in a more meaningful way.

Many of them said Barbados was not doing justice to the cause of their forefathers who sacrificed their lives so they could enjoy today’s liberties.

Speaking at the launch of the Season of Emancipation, held at Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St Michael, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr Shantal Munro-Knight, said Government was committed to fully recognising the contributions of the former enslaved whose shoulders Barbadians stand on.
