Get it right in Fontabelle!

The countdown is on for the International Cricket Council’s Men’s T20 World Cup. Already there is a lot of hype surrounding this event, especially since Barbados is set to host nine matches, including the final at Kensington Oval on June 29.

There is not only anticipation and some excitement surrounding this country hosting that leg, but a lot of expectation as well.

No doubt, there will be many hoping to get a piece of this pie and reap some sweet rewards as all eyes will be on the cricketing ‘Mecca’ of the region.

Chairman of the local organising committee for the T20 World Cup, Noel Lynch, Barbados’ former Ambassador to Washington, is already on record saying he believes the event could derive plenty benefits for Barbados and Barbadians.

However, we must be in a position to do so. We have to be prepared to put in the work and spend the money needed to put our best face to the world.

For example, some attention must be paid to Fontabelle, St Michael.

This is the street which thousands will traverse to head to the Oval for the cricket matches.

It is a sad sight for me to see what Fontabelle has become – a far cry from what it was.

With all the fanfare expected at the Oval and its environs, including Fontabelle, where many journey to and fro to catch the hype, celebrate victories or “drown” themselves in defeat, this street needs to be in a proper state to welcome our visitors and restore some pride to us as locals.

So, to the officials, recognise this is the area many will see first before they enter the gates of Kensington.

Please let us make sure it is tip top shape as we present ourselves to the world.
