Farewell to brave Philip

Philip Decourcey Small did not lose his battle with cancer, said his close friend Shekita Carrington, because he did not lose his wit or spirit and never became bitter.

Carrington was delivering the eulogy yesterday at the funeral service of the 20-year-old, whose battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma galvanised the nation.

Barbadians got involved in Small’s fight via the Pull Up 4 Philip campaign, and organisations such as KFC hosted special promotions to help raise money for the youth.

In the end, the former St Leonard’s Boys’ Secondary School student, whose illness forced him to cut his academic journey short, did not survive after being diagnosed with Stage 4 of the disease.

During the funeral at Abundant Life Assembly, Bank Hall, St Michael, Carrington gave anecdotes of Small’s short life, including how he got two of his many nicknames.  (CA)
