Disabled on the move

More than 200 members of the disabled community, friends, families and supporters, most decked in green and orange T-shirts, took part in Saturday’s Run, Wheel And Walk event from Cheapside, The City, to Lower Collymore Rock, St Michael.

The event was staged by the National Disabilities Unit (NDU).

John Hollingsworth, director of the NDU, said staff worked tirelessly to organise the event.

Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey said it was just one of the activities to celebrate National Disabilities Month.

“The support along the route was very good. The purpose was to raise awareness and the need for inclusion and to be recognised. The disabled are also human beings,” he added.

The minister said one drawback was that some of the disabled complained about the state of the roads negatively affecting their transportation.

Hollingsworth said the National Disabilities Unit, was “pleased with the support”, adding the turnout was more than he anticipated. (NS)
