Providing electronic devices for students in the Caribbean is not enough, says director general of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Dr Didacus Jules.
He wants more done to ensure connectivity is adequate and that there is enough culturally relevant content for students to consume.
Speaking yesterday during the Caribbean Telecommunications Union’s (CTU) virtual forum on Information Communication Technology In Education, Jules said although efforts of regional governments to improve technology in schools at the turn of the 21st century were commendable, they were not enough.
“Many of the efforts made in that early period were symbolic rather than substantive or systemic. In the first decade of the 2000s, many Caribbean governments focused on the provision of laptops to schools with the fanfare of ‘one laptop per child’, but this overlooked the fundamental truths of education,” he said.
