Crop gets going

Sugar cane is being harvested and grinding is set to commence on Wednesday.

Loads of cane were delivered to Portvale factory in Blowers, St James on Monday, signalling the official start of the 2023 season.

“We started taking sugar cane today, though I’m not sure if all the farmers have started to bring their cane. There haven’t been any issues so far, not that I’m aware,” said chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC) Orlanda Atherley.

“The factory is warming up and we will probably start grinding later in the week, probably as early as Wednesday, once we can get enough cane coming in.”

Mike Gill of Ashbury Plantation in St George was anticipating a good crop, since there was rain in Barbados right through to the start of February. (Nation News)
