Members of the Barbados Fire Service are trying to better understand some of Barbados’ cave systems.
A group of 17, including Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard, yesterday explored Coles Cave in St Thomas, led by Barbados Water Authority (BWA) technical adviser Dr John Mwansa, himself an experienced hiker and caver.
“We are here to do a familiarisation tour in the cave with Dr Mwansa. We’ve recognised that almost every day we have hikers and persons entering caves and gullies for fun and we’ve also recognised we really don’t know the terrain and outlay of these caves.
“If something happens, we are the ones who have to mount a rescue, so we believe it is timely that we get familiar with these caves so if something happens, we don’t have to take a civilian inside to guide us. It is important we be proactive in saving lives although at the end of the day, we don’t only want to save lives but we want the quality of life after the rescue to be the same as before it,” he said.
