Call to brace for higher temperatures

With temperatures expected to surpass last year’s record high, Barbadians are being told to brace for the possibility of even more pressure on this country’s health service.

This warning comes from head of the Pan American Health Organisation’s (PAHO) fellowship on Climate Change and Health, Professor Chris Oura.

Speaking to the media following the opening ceremony at Tamarind Cove Hotel yesterday, Oura said Barbados’ high population of people with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) were especially vulnerable to elevated temperatures. He also supported calls for a change in hours for outdoor work due to the heat levels. (CLM)
