Bridgetown Initiative high on summit agenda

The Summit For A New Global Financial Pact, which starts in Paris, France, on Thursday, will be results driven.

French officials said the country was excited to welcome Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley to the summit.

“Prime Minister Mottley puts the spotlight on vulnerable countries. It is important to note that some of our [French] islands experience this same vulnerability, so support from Barbados is key,” said one official.

Mottley arrived in Paris Tuesday following her trip to Accra, Ghana, where she spoke at the annual meeting of Afreximbank, and will be part of one of the working groups.

Some said earlier the intention behind the summit was to “get results, get things to happen and change the world”.

During the two-day summit, it is expected that Mottley and the Bridgetown Initiative will feature prominently.

The 2022 Bridgetown Initiative is calling for urgent and decisive action and reform of global financial companies, repositioning them to better help climate-vulnerable countries which do not have the “fiscal space to adopt new debt”.

Around 50 government leaders are expected to attend.  (CM)
