Boy, 10, steals the show

Favourite Jefferson Guye along with former Barbados cricketer Jamal “Bert” Smith, Jesse Haynes and Shaquille Remy advanced to last night’s quarter-finals of the Joe Bitter Weed Road Tennis Tournament at Belfield.

However, the surprise was not that quartet topping their respective groups after three successive nights of preliminary action, but the advancement of 10-year-old St Stephen’s student Tyrico Brathwaite and the inglorious elimination of former elite spinner Sadiq Hill.

Police officer Hill, who had won the previous edition of a similar Belfield tournament, failed to win a game or match in Group A. After Miranda Manning had lost her opening match on Sunday to Brathwaite, she returned to stun Hill, 21-17, 22-20 on Monday.

The drama continued on Tuesday with Hill then being humiliated by Brathwaite 21-18, 21-14. The continuation of the rained-out match between Hill and Jesse Haynes saw Haynes moving from 5-1 to win 21-13, 21-14. That gave Group A to Haynes with Brathwaite placing second.  Manning who was the only female to take a match ended third in that group. (KB)
